Volunteers needed to banish litter from canal in Birmingham
Waterways and wellbeing charity, Canal & River Trust, is calling on local people in Birmingham to join the fight and help eradicate litter and plastic pollution from the city’s canals.
Using the city’s very own electric litter boat called ‘Aquarius’, which has been a feature on the canal for the last 20 years, the Trust is asking people who are available during the week to volunteer and help tackle the problem.
The Trust’s volunteers work in teams aboard the boat or on the towpath, using long litter pickers to remove rubbish from the water which is then carefully recycled where possible.
Research shows that more than half a million items of plastic reach the oceans from the UK’s canals and rivers every year.
