What's involved?

As volunteer reservoir surveillance inspection buddy, you will help to support our operations teams with regular essential inspections and maintenance of our reservoirs. Duties will include monitoring and managing the level of water within the reservoir, monitoring groundwater using a piezometer, monitoring and managing vegetation, maintenance of feeders, and the general maintenance and upkeep of the reservoir areas. This opportunity will cover the Northern area of the East Midlands region.

Our reservoir volunteers will provide essential support to the local team allowing them to carry out effective and regular monitoring of these amazing assets. Which are not only essential to keep our canals in the East Midlands flowing but are also valued for their beauty and benefit to the local communities that surround them.

What skills are we looking for?

The most important attributes are the willingness to be out in all weathers whilst having a real awareness of health and safety in relation to yourself and the Trust staff you are buddied up with.

You will need a hands-on approach, a can-do attitude, and the good attention to detail. It may be that you have an interest in the waterways and/or good local knowledge of the area, but they aren’t essential so long as you’re willing to learn more about both.

What will you get from us?

This is a chance to have a positive impact on your local waterway; helping support or teams to deliver vital monitoring works whilst volunteering in spectacular surroundings. It is a fact that being by the water makes you happier and healthier, this role allows you to increase your own wellbeing by spending your time at our breath-taking reservoirs.

Volunteers in this role will receive an induction and on-going training as it’s needed. The Trust will provide appropriate PPE and equipment and offers reasonable out of pocket expenses.

You will receive reservoir inspection training. There is a legal requirement for those conducting reservoir surveillance to be trained and accredited, with accreditation assessed every 5 years.
