Northwich Office, Navigation Road, Northwich, Cheshire
Our waterways are home to over 8,500 structures, some over 200years old. These structures include culverts, essentially “a tubular, box, piped or arched structure that allows water to flow under a canal, highway, railway or similar obstruction, from one side to the other”. Our responsibilities for these structures include ensuring records are up to date, so we have created a voluntary role to confirm existing inventory information including ownership and accurate location maps.
In addition to some desk-based tasks (using GIS, historical records and databases) this role also requires site visits to ascertain valuable information such as exact culvert locations, construction details, dimensions etc. If you have an interest in our industrial past and engineering, this could be an ideal task. Some travel is required across the North West region (there is some flexibility regarding the office base), sometimes to remote sites that are not always easily accessible by public transport.
We expect that this role could be of interest to graduates, students or retired professionals, as well as those interested in continuing professional development. After a successful informal interview and collection of a reference, you will be volunteering alongside a specialist Engineering team for one or two days per week in one of these offices - either Northwich, Red Bull, Rochdale or Standedge Tunnel.
Please note that there is some physical activity involved in this task, which could interest those looking for an active role that is not just based behind a desk. We offer out of pocket expenses, as well as personal protective equipment and the chance to be involved in other voluntary tasks.
This task will suit someone who has good computer skills (including GIS, although we may be able to offer some basic training in this area) and be comfortable working both independently and with a range of staff including our Engineering team. Due to the location of the sites, you will need to be able to regularly access reliable transport.
