Activities: Marketing and promotions

Starts: Anytime

Pocklington Canal

You’ll be one of a small team leading guided walks on or around the Pocklington Canal as part of a programme of advertised walks.

Depending on your own interests and knowledge, you will theme the walks that you lead around one (or more) of these key areas: historical features along the canal, the wildlife and ancient landscapes that surround the canal, or the local history and family connections.

You will be able to choose the length of walks – anywhere from one to twelve miles – largely based on the ‘Short Walks on the Pocklington Canal’ booklet that will be produced in spring 2017.

Following your walk leader training, you will be responsible for:
• Devising routes, associated commentary and ensuring walks are risk assessed.
• Leading the walks in a manner which ensures all participants feel welcome
• Letting the point of contact know, in advance, if you will be unable to lead a walk
• To record numbers of attendees for each walk

Benefits

You'll get to volunteer outside in the fresh air showing people the beautiful Pocklington Canal. You'll have the support of the project officer, and will be accompanied for your first couple of walks. Training will be provided, and you will be able to claim travel expenses.

Skills required

We are looking for people with a friendly manner who are comfortable talking to groups. Some prior knowledge about an aspect of the canal would be a bonus (ie wildlife, history), but not essential.

This role in part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported project, ‘A Gem in the Landscape’.
