South East Waterways
Do you appreciate the engineering of canal and river network? We are seeking volunteers to assist our professional length inspectors. This role will suit someone with a strong interest (and ideally professional background) in engineering, and will see you offering vital support to our teams in the south of England. There will also be opportunities with the northern teams.
Following an induction to the Trust, you will be paired with one of our friendly, experienced length inspectors. Whilst they are very much responsible for recording defects, and the type of risks they pose, you will have the chance to learn more about our varied historic structures and support our skilled inspectors.
You need to live within fairly easy reach of the local canal and river network – exact locations will be decided depending on locations of volunteer interest.
A professional engineering background would be preferred, what is essential is an interest in the inland waterways, a friendly attitude and ability to commit to the required days, as well as the physical stamina to complete the role.
To do this role, access to reliable transport is an advantage. The terrain that we cover (without a vehicle) can be a challenging in parts, and some shifts can take 10 hours and cover up to 12 miles. It goes without saying too that you must be prepared to venture out in all weathers. In return we will cover out of pocket expenses, and appropriate safety equipment and offer a full induction and ongoing support.
