Naburn Lock, River Ouse
Over the past year a small team of conservation volunteers have been working hard to get the derelict buildings at Naburn Locks transformed into an impressive snapshot in time. Now that the buildings are taking shape, we are recruiting a team of tour guides to be based at the locks who will talk about the heritage of the site and offer tours of the old forges and workshops which have been painstaking restored and to provide a meaningful visitor experience.
We are recruiting tour guides over winter to train in the spring months ready to offer tours in April.
This is an opportunity to be the ‘face’ of the Canal & River Trust, playing a key role in the enjoyment of the visitor experience and ensuring visitors leave with a greater understanding and affinity to the waterways.
You don’t need to be a canal expert but we are looking for people who are friendly and approachable, who are not afraid to ask if they don’t know the immediate answer.
The opportunity to volunteer in some unique, beautiful surroundings and meet new people. If you’ve got a passion and interest in the waterways, you can share it with others with the opportunity to learn how to lead tours and share your knowledge of the waterways heritage and wildlife with the public.
It’s very satisfying at the end of the conversation when people leave with a smile of ‘thanks’.
A friendly helpful manner and the ability to communicate effectively with people are essential for this role.
The role may involve opening and securing the building and in the first few months helping to develop the visitor experience.
