Reference: OPP0003414

Activities: Practical

Starts: Anytime

Brecon, Monmouth & Brecon Canal, Monmouthshire

This is an opportunity to get involved in a conservation/ heritage project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Monmouthshire & Brecon Lime kiln Trail project includes the conservation and interpretation of three significant lime kilns along the M&B canal owned by CRT in South Wales, as well as the interpretation of two others not in the ownership of CRT. Goytre Wharf has the potential to be the Trust's primary canal destination in South Wales for visitors and events. The lime kilns are a significant historical feature occupying a key position in the site.
You can get involved by carrying out heritage repairs, including lime mortar pointing (which will help manage further deterioration in the future) as well as clearing vegetation, replacing fencing and supporting the development of two new interpretation panels.

You can gain first-hand experience of working on listed structures, learn new skills and be trained in lime mortar techniques

Skills required

No previous skills needed although a keen interest in restoration and heritage would be an advantage - supervision from Canal & River Trust staff and full training provided by our skilled workforce
