We’re looking for enthusiastic people to join our dedicated team of Collections Volunteers looking after the large object collection at the National Waterways Museum. This role includes assisting with the management and care of our collections and improving storage conditions. It will involve moving large items between storage locations, using suitable PPE and handling equipment along with the taking and processing of digital images for items which need cataloguing. From time to time there may also be the opportunity to get involved in condition assessment and conservation work. There is also a possibility to become involved in the database aspect of the cataloguing later in the project.

This role will give you the opportunity to do something new and different:

• The chance to help care for an interesting and nationally significant museum collection
• A chance to meet new people and work in a friendly team
• Raise your existing skill base and acquire new skills
• Keep active, fit and motivated
• Gain invaluable experience, great for your CV and employment prospects

Skills required

You will work with our existing Collections Volunteers to photograph, catalogue and improve storage of the objects in our Large Object Store. We’re looking for people who are:

• Motivated and able to move relatively large items between storage locations using suitable PPE and handling equipment
• Committed and enthusiastic about the aims of the museum
• Willing to learn about museum principles and ethics
• Good organisational skills and a proactive approach

An ability to recognise technical objects to be able to sort them into groups as we improve storage conditions would be an advantage
