I have lots of fun creating new habitats for the wildlife and meeting new people.

What's involved?

Volunteers required for the maintenance and monitoring of vegetation works along our canals as part of our cyclic maintenance programme. The role involves tackling specific and pre-identified vegetation areas. Working closely with the Task Manager and the Lead Volunteer for the Vegetation team.

Ideally the volunteer will have a good understanding of the natural environment (we will be working closely with the environmental team to ensure that environmental appraisals are in place prior to works commencing)
The volunteer will be shown the necessary health and safety requirements.
Currently we are using hand tools to tackle the vegetation but our long term aspirations will be to train volunteers to use more robust tools in addition where appropriate
The role will include managing vegetation, keeping the towpath accessible , taking down small low hanging branches.

What skills are we looking for?

Ability to work as part of a team to deliver works to an agreed specification
Computer literate ( to be able to keep up to date with their my volunteering portal, inputting volunteering hours and expenses)
Understand the importance of Health and Safety whilst undertaking tasks and adhering to the risk assessments in place

What will you get from us?

The volunteer will gain an understanding of vegetation and environmental management
Will be able to assist in environmental appraisals
Will be able to gain experience using hand tools with the potential for further training in the future
Be able to explore areas of the canal and contribute to environmental enhancement projects
