Trent & Mersey Canal
The Trust is looking for Assistant Volunteer Tunnel Keepers to support our existing team of experienced Volunteer Tunnel keepers and Staff with the operation of the Harecastle Tunnel. The tunnel is situated on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Stoke on Trent.
The role includes managing boats as they arrive at the tunnel wanting to travel through the structure. Some on-site maintenance will be required to ensure the site is kept clean and tidy throughout the day.
From March 1st until October 31st Tunnel passages are available 7 days a week between the hours of 8am & 5pm. We are looking for volunteers that are available to volunteer Monday to Sunday with a particular emphasis on weekend working, and with flexibility on start finish times. We are looking for Volunteers who enjoy meeting people and can deliver the best customer experience to all visitors to the tunnel site.

Full training on the operation of this heritage structure will be provided.
Meeting different people throughout the day, working outdoors in the fresh air or Improving the customers experience, it’s a great way to meet other local volunteers and learn new skills.
What skills are we looking for?
Full training will be given through a combination of on-line learning, working alongside our existing team of experienced Volunteer Tunnel Keepers and staff, all monitored and assessed by Canal and River Trust Tunnel Management.
To carry out this role you will ideally have an interest in the waterways, and the local area but this is not essential.
A background in customer service would be an advantage. The most important attributes are an ability to interact with and help others. A friendly manner, strong communication skills, Ability to follow protocols and procedures, and an ability to make a good first impression.
