What's involved?

The Trust is looking for Volunteers to assist with the operation of the Harecastle Tunnel, situated on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Stoke on Trent. The Operation includes managing boats as they arrive at the tunnel and want to travel through the structure. Some site maintenance will be required to ensure the site is kept clean and tidy throughout the day.
The Tunnel is operational 7 days a week so we are looking for volunteers that are available to cover Monday to Sunday. The hours and days are flexible for start and finish times. We are looking for Volunteers who enjoy meeting people and can deliver the best customer experience to all visitors to the tunnel site.

Full training will be provided of this heritage structure. Meeting different people throughout the day, working outdoors in the fresh air or Improving the customers experience. It’s a great way to meet other local volunteers and learn new skills.

What skills are we looking for?

Full training will be given with both the operation and the internal inductions through our experienced trainers and assessors.
To carry out this role you will ideally have an interest in the waterways, and the local area but this is not essential.
Background in customer service would be an advantage. The most important attributes are an ability to interact with and help others. A friendly manner and an ability to make a good first impression.
