Ellesmere Port, Shropshire Union Canal, the Wirral
The National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port has a fantastic collection of boats, buildings, boat builders kit and much more. And engines! Our dedicated team care for and conserve the collection as well as bringing it to life by telling visitors about it. Comprehensive knoweldge of the inner workings of the engines up front isn't essential but the enthusiasm to share this nationally important collection. Come and join our team.
We're looking for new people specifically to demonstrate the operation of historic engines. For steam engines, some previous experience of steam boilers and plant would be an advantage. This is an ongoing role, although we aim to be as flexible as possible with the time that you can give. Our busy periods are holidays and the summer time.
As a volunteer with the Canal & River Trust you will be making a massive contribution to the charity, often carrying out activities we would otherwise not be able to do.
This will give you the opportunity to do something new and different:
-raise your existing skill base and acquire new skills
-keep active, fit and motivated
-enjoy being by water which is great for your wellbeing
-gain experience at a national charity Canal & River Trust
-help care for a wonderful nationally important collection
-gain invaluable experience, great for your CV and employment prospects
You will receive out of pocket expenses. Any equipment required will be supplied.
Existing engineering or mechanical experience is an advantage but not essential. This role is principally about telling people about the engines, bringing them to life and making them accessible. Following a training period (with an internal CAATS assessment qualification) you will be competent to undertake an engine pre-check, start-up, run and stop, specific engines. Training to accurately record the operation in a logbook and engage with visitors in a friendly and informative way will also be provided.
