We’re looking for volunteers who can join our West Midlands operations team and help us get our canals ready for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This ongoing volunteering role will involve carrying out a variety of maintenance activities which lead to or are near one of the Commonwealth Games venues.
Ideally, you’ll be able to volunteer one day a week or more the choice is yours, and you’ll get the opportunity to work on a range of activities such as clearing pathways, helping to maintain some of our 200year old structures, cleaning and installing new signage, managing vegetation and helping other volunteering groups with their activities.
This opportunity is along the following canal locations:
What's in it for you?
Being by water makes us all feel happier and healthier. With this volunteering role you’ll get the opportunity to spend your time outdoors, helping out on the canal and towpaths. Full training will be provided and, if DIY or being interested in heritage structures is your thing, then this is the role for you.
You’ll get the chance to make new friends, learn new skills and meet local people who use the canal. Every day is different - one day you could be lubricating and adjusting lock mechanisms so they are smoother to operate, the next you could be helping to fill in pot holes on the towpath or even assisting to carry our repairs to our 200 year old brick work.
What skills are we looking for?
This role would suit someone who is interested in DIY and has the ability to apply practical skills in an outdoor setting. You will also enjoy talking to people and sharing local knowledge. This opportunity will suit you if you have a friendly enthusiastic manner and enjoy working outdoors. The role involves you working with power tools and gardening equipment and will require you to take part in training assessments.
