What's involved?
We are looking for NEW Education Volunteers with a passion to inspire youngsters to explore our canals and rivers, in schools, on the towpath, at waterside events, through our website or in our museums. This role has a base at Trent Lock but will cover Nottinghamshire and Derby.
We are looking for people who can volunteer flexibly and respond to school and informal group requests as required and who can commit to at least 3 or 4 days a month. This is an active role where children keeping up with children is essential.
The education volunteers support and encourage key stage 2 (7-11 age group) school and youth group (brownies, guides, cubs and scouts) visits to our sites and to work in local communities.
Due to working with children and our safeguarding policy, successful applicants will be required to attend an interview and a full enhanced DBS check will need to be carried out prior to working with any groups.

What skills are we looking for?
For roles working with children we are looking for volunteers who have
• Previous experience of working with young children or a strong desire to gain experience in this area
• The desire to work outdoors
• The confidence to talk to, and lead workshops with, groups of children
• The ability to enthuse young people through talks and activities
• The ability to volunteer flexibly
• The ability to work independently or within a dedicated team.
• The ability to drive to different locations particularly in rural areas
• The ability to volunteer flexibly, particularly during school term times,
This role involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to volunteering with us.
What will you get from us?
We give you full training and provide resources for leading groups of children through a number of training days and team meetings. You will have the support of an Learning and Skills Officer as well as the other volunteers in your team.
We provide you with training, a Uniform and the resources and support to lead inspiring visits to our waterways. We reimburse you for travel costs within 40 miles of your base (Trent Lock).
