Lock keepers have been a fixture on Britain’s canals for hundreds of years and are one of the oldest traditions of the waterways. One of the jewels of the canal network Caen Hill Lock Flight in Devizes comprises sixteen locks which are over 200 years old, the site is a scheduled ancient monument. From April to September the lock flight is opened at 8am and closed at 8pm. The role of the Evening Volunteer Lock Keeper is to ensure the Caen Hill Flight is operated safely between 4pm and 8pm during summer opening hours. Duties will include water control, ensuring all craft have exited the flight by 8pm closing time, padlocking the locks to prevent use overnight. Additionally there will be a requirement to ensure the operational yard is secured and alarmed at the end of the shift.
This task offers fresh air, exercise and the chance to enjoy some of our beautiful waterways and the wildlife that lives there.
You will receive training required for the role including a one day health & safety course and lock keeper training and assessment. Lone working will be involved. Must be able to commit to a minimum of 1 evening in 7 from April to September.
