Explorers education volunteer - Greater Manchester & Stockport

Activities: Education, Explorer Education

Starts: 1 July 2021 to 1 June 2023

What's involved?

If you love working with children and enjoy being outdoors join our brand new team of education volunteers in Greater Manchester & Stockport! Help children discover our hidden urban waterways through our Canal & River Explorers programme by leading sessions for primary schools, cub scouts and brownie groups in their classrooms and out and about on our canals.

We are looking for people who can volunteer flexibly and respond to school and informal group requests as required. Ideally you can commit to at least 3 or 4 days a month and we will always try and give at least 2 weeks’ notice of a visit. You can expect to work with children of all ages either in school or at the waterside with visits typically taking place during school hours between 9am – 3.30pm. We are developing a new base for this team of volunteers at Marple Wharf with some sessions based there and others across the Greater Manchester & Stockport area.

What's in it for you?

The opportunity to learn more about waterway heritage and wildlife; using your skills and learning new ones; being in an attractive environment and of course working with children!

We'll provide you with resources and full training on how to lead groups of children. You'll also have the support of an education coordinator as well as the other volunteers in your team and we'll reimburse you for all travel costs.

What skills are we looking for?

This role involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not always a bar to volunteering with us.
