Explorers Education Volunteer - Stourport Basin
Activities: Outdoors, Education, Regularly
Starts: 15 July 2021
Stourport Wharf, Sevenside, Stourport Basins
Due to the current situation with Coronavirus, this volunteer opportunity has been on hold until recently. Please let us know your interest and we will contact you as soon as possible.
We are looking for people with experience of working with children and a love of canals & rivers.
We are looking for people who can volunteer flexibly and respond to school and informal group requests as required and who can commit to at least 3 or 4 days a month. We try and give you at least 2 weeks’ notice of a visit. Often several sessions will take place in one school or waterside location in a day normally from about 9am – 3.30pm.
For an inland town, miles away from the sea, Stourport on Severn has a surprising and delightful maritime atmosphere. It was once a busy inland port, which grew up around the point where the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal joins the River Severn. Today the restored canal basins are a great place to discover the history of the Stourport and the River Severn.
What's in it for you?
The opportunity to learn more about waterway heritage and wildlife; using your skills and learning new ones; being in an attractive environment and of course working with children!
We provide you with the resources to deliver inspiring visits with children about our waterways. You will have the support of an education officer as well as the other volunteers in your team. We reimburse you for all travel costs within 40 mile round trip from your base (Stourport Basins).
What skills are we looking for?
Previous experience of working with young people in primary and/or secondary schools or other education settings.
Experience of delivering hands-on learning resources for children.
The ability to enthuse young people through talks and activities.
The ability to volunteer flexibly particularly during school term times.
This role involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to volunteering with us.
