Foulridge Tunnel safety message

We have opened Foulridge Tunnel to non-powered craft as part of the charity’s plans to develop the 162-mile Desmond Family Canoe Trail, connecting Liverpool and Goole.

It is safe for boaters and canoeists to use the tunnel as long as everyone follows some simple safety precautions.

Powered craft are required to:

  • Switch on your headlight and some interior lights.
  • As you go in, sound one long blast on your horn.
  • Steer by looking at one side of the tunnel only and keep to a moderate speed.
  • Check the entrances of the tunnel prior to the beginning of your passage to ensure the tunnel is clear.
  • Only enter the tunnel when the lights are green.

Non-powered craft are required to:

  • Only enter the tunnel when the lights are green.
  • Check the tunnel is clear before entering.
  • Have a bright white forward facing light
  • Carry an alternative means of attracting attention, we are recommending carrying an airhorn.
  • Wear a personal floatation device.
  • We advise only experienced canoeists enter the tunnel alone
  • No overtaking or stopping in the tunnel.
