The charity making life better by water

Our major works

Our major engineering programme is the more glamorous element of canal maintenance.

We also look after 75 reservoirs, many of which are important for the running of the network. These are among the most costly structures we care for. We have a legal duty to ensure they are maintained to a high standard.

Over the past 10 years our major engineering programme has succeeded in cutting the number of major structures classified ‘in the worst condition' in half.

Sustaining our canal and river banks also makes up a large proportion of our programme. Piling and softer coir roll bank protection is often installed as part of larger projects in order to protect the towpath, cut down on dredging and create better wildlife habitats.
