Waterways and towpaths play an important role in widening travel choices for cycling, walking, freight and public transport.
The towpath network provides a motor-vehicle-free environment in which to travel to work, school or home. In addition, there may be opportunities for waterside developments to use waterborne freight in the construction cycle, in the delivery of supplies and the removal of waste wherever practical, economic and environmentally desirable.
The Canal & River Trust encourages applicants for planning permission and local planning authorities to explore these opportunities as a means of enhancing the sustainability of development, including in the preparation of travel plan frameworks and travel plans, particularly for ‘Major’ and ‘EIA’ scale applications.
