We have been able to remove the diesel, the canal is free from pollution and navigation can now resume.

Please be advised navigation remains closed between Bridge 30, Carrs Swing Bridge and Bridge 31 on the Peak Forest Canal at Furness Vale whilst our teams continue to clean the polluted area, working closely with the Environment Agency.

In addition to the booms and pads placed within the canal to contain the pollution, we have been using a wildlife and environmentally friendly product to absorb and lock away the diesel. Whilst the majority of the diesel has now been cleared, there is an area of ice in the centre of the canal which is difficult to access and requires further work.

Our teams will be back on site tomorrow to continue works.

A further update will be provided tomorrow, Thursday 22 December.
