Anderton Boat Lift

A closure is required at Anderton Boat Lift to repair the sealing face on the East caisson and prevent water leakage from the wedge, which is affecting the operation of the lift.  Accelerated deterioration of the seals has resulted in the works being brought forward and had been initially planned for replacement as part of our works programme scheduled for February 2022. The boat lift will be closed from 21 June 2021 to 2 July to facilitate the necessary repairs.

Although the problem affects the East caisson, closure of the West caisson is required for the duration of the works as the hydraulic system is not designed to have both caissons at aqueduct level at the same time and this is needed to complete the repair.  In addition, works require the drywell to be kept free and clear and this cannot be achieved whilst the West caisson is in operation.  As such, no passages will be available during the repair works. 

We understand how frustrating and disruptive this is for our customers, with the number of other stoppages in the region, but we are convinced that it is very likely that the seals will fail completely later in the season if we don’t do this now.  This would result in a longer and more disruptive closure. Our teams will be working 7 days a week to get this fixed and back open.
