Selby Swingbridge

We have received an update from the contractors and unfortunately we have encountered further delays to the reinstallation of the Selby Swingbridge.

Selby Swing Bridge is to be returned to site and installed the week commencing the 7th of February. In this time we will have restricted boat movement through Selby Swingbridge. These times of movement will be restricted to 08:00 - 09:00 and 16:00-17:00 from 7th to the 11th February.

Please see the restriction notice that we are placing to advise of these times and dates of movement.

Our contractors are working hard to complete repairs to the bridge and return it to site as soon as possible. However, due to a delay in the supply of timber materials to complete the repair the return of the bridge to site has been delayed until 28th January 2022. 

In the meantime, the road will remain closed and the temporary footbridge across the canal will remain in place to enable boat passage underneath to continue.

We have received an update from the contractors and the bridge is to be installed between the 15th and 21st of December.

We will update this notice with any further information that we receive.

The temporary footbridge has now been installed and the Swingbridge is now swung open to be taken away for repairs, therefore passage through Selby Swingbridge is now available.

We are sorry to report that the erection of the temporary scaffold footbridge is taking longer than initially forecast and the revised estimate from our contractor for completing this section of the work is Wednesday 4th August 2021. This is the result of a specification change to the scaffold structure. Once completed the swing bridge will be lifted out and taken for repair on Thursday 5th August 2021.

We are working with the contractor to ensure that any further delays are prevented and that navigation re-opens as soon as possible.

We understand this further delay is frustrating and represents another disruption to cruising plans you may have and apologise for this

Unfortunately, we have experienced some delays with agreeing a design for the temporary scaffold footbridge required before we can affect a road closure with the local authority on Selby swing bridge.  

The pedestrian bridge installation is to start on the Wednesday 21st July 2021 and will be completed by Friday 30th July 2021. Upon completion the swing bridge will be opened to allow boat movement.

A further navigation restriction will be in place on Thursday 5th August 2021 to allow the swing bridge to be lifted out and taken off site for repair.

The pedestrian footbridge is programmed to be installed between the 5th and 20th of July. Following this installation we will be able to swing the bridge to allow boaters to move.

Once the bridge has been removed and inspected the works are expected to take around 8 weeks with the expected completion of the project in late October.

Unfortunately we have not been able to get a temporary road closure from the council to allow us to swing the bridge in the interim. As was rejected on the basis of no pedestrian access being implemented.

Since Selby swingbridge was damaged by overweight vehicles our team have been reviewing options for carrying out repairs to rectify the damage.

We regret to inform that the design detail of the temporary pedestrian footbridge is still being finalised. This alternative means of access over the canal must be in place before it is possible to put a road closure in place to lift-off the defective bridge and re-open navigation.

We now expect the defective bridge to be removed and navigation re-open in mid-July.  

In recognition of the additional disruption this causes we are investigating whether it is possible to perform and emergency swing of the bridge for a limited period to allow boat passage should those moored in the area wish to move.

We will make a further announcement on this as our plans develop, and not before Monday 28th June 2021.

The designs for the temporary pedestrian footbridge that were being worked on, have now been received. Following the site meeting today, these will need revising before the construction works can take place.

The construction of the footbridge bridge and the removal of the road bridge will coincide with the road closure. These works are likely to be undertaken mid to late June, once the council has granted our road closure request.

We understand the inconvenience that the repair is having on boat movement at this present time and thankyou for your patience, whilst we prepare to undertake the work required.

We will update the notice when any further information is received on the progression of the works.

We anticipate it will take around 2 weeks for our Contractors to carry out the temporary footbridge installation and the damaged bridge lift, though we are awaiting a precise date from our contractor for this work to commence.

There will also be a short closure to reinstall the bridge in around 3 months time (date to be confirmed).

We appreciate this closure of the navigation is frustrating; we are doing everything we can to reopen the navigation as soon as possible.

The passenger footbridge will be a temporary installation whilst the removed Road Bridge is repaired allowing crafts to pass underneath.

We are hoping to have this work done as soon as possible.

Contractors and other parties involved in the works have conducted a site assessment and decided on plans to install a passenger footbridge.

Assessment have also been made for the safe removal of the Road Bridge and these works are looking to be done as soon as possible.

Once the road bridge has been lifted the navigation will be reopened.

Please expect some disruption when the passenger footbridge is installed which we are anticipating maybe for a couple of days

The expected duration of all the works involving the removal and installation of the footbridge will be 3 months.

We will update this notice when further information is received on the progression of the works.

Contractors appointed to carry out the repairs have been to site and the planning stage continues with a joint meeting arranged for 14 May.

Following this meeting a further update will be provided.

We continue to plan repairs to Selby Swingbridge and make an application to the local authority for a road closure to carry out the repairs.

Once received, the bridge will be swung into the canal open position to allow the repairs to take place.

We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience and we are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue.

We will provide further updates by Friday 7th May.

Following the recent closure of Selby swing bridge, a further incident took place last Tuesday 13th April 2021 when a HGV hit the bridge whilst trying to cross it, despite the bridge being signed with a 3 tonne weight limit.   

During a site inspection on Wednesday 14th April 2021 with CRT engineers the bridge failed to operate. CRT are working with partners and the local highways team to make it safe and plan a way forward. At this time CRT are looking at various options to get the canal open as soon as possible, however we are unable to give a date for this.

We will publish a further update on Friday 30th April 2021. The bridge will remain unavailable for operation in the meantime.

We apologise for the disruption this continues to cause.

The Swing Bridge is out of balance and is unable to swing.

Contractors will be attending the site.
