We regret to inform that we have been unable to secure the necessary road closure at Tankards Bridge from North Yorkshire County Council to enable us to complete full repairs to the parapet walls of the bridge following a vehicle strike a few weeks ago. This is due to the nearby road closure of the A19 for ongoing works and the need for Tankards Bridge to remain open to allow for continued access around the local area. It will therefore not be possible to schedule full repairs until such a time as the A19 re-opens and a subsequent closure of Tankards Bridge can be secured. For updates on the closure please refer to the North Yorkshire County Council website.

In the meantime, we have worked hard to find a solution that offers safe passage under the bridge. From Tuesday 17th November 2020 the bridge will be re-opened to canal traffic with a restriction limiting passage to vessels with a maximum height of 7ft. This limitation will be clearly signed on site, and vessels greater than 7ft in height will not be able to pass the protective scaffold mitigating the risk of any falling masonry. Whilst we appreciate this will not meet all needs for passage it is a necessary restriction for the continued safety of skippers and boats passing under the bridge.

We appreciate ongoing patience with this restriction and will provide further update upon learning of the scheduled re-opening of the A19

We have worked hard with North Yorkshire County Council over recent weeks to secure necessary permissions.

It is our intention to install protective scaffold around the bridge on 12th & 13th November 2020 that will allow us to re-open the navigation shortly afterwards.

Further update will be provided as scaffold works progress.
