Type: Towpath Closure
Is the towpath closed? Yes
Closest waterway: Wyrley & Essington Canal
Starts at: Stubbs Bridge
Ends at: Stubbs Bridge
The towpath will be closed along the Walsall Locks, and from Stubbs Bridge to Birchalls Junction Bridge whilst we undertake surface dressing works to the previously completed tarmac surfacing, which was unfortunately delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. All works have been carefully considered before returning to site and will be done in line with social distancing rules and as per current Government guidance.
Towpath works at this location is funded by the National Productivity Investment Fund in conjunction with Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council as part of a package of towpath improvement across Walsall to provide better accessibility for walkers and cyclists. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
From Wednesday 13 May our canals and rivers are open for navigation. Our towpaths are also open for exercise or journeys to undertake essential work, but please try to avoid any stretches with boats moored against the towpath. Strictly observe social distancing at all times, following the latest advice from the government. Before you go by boat, bike or boot, remember to check your route.
The completion date of construction work has been updated.
As part of a wider Towpath Resurfacing Project, works are being carried out to re-surface towpath and improve access. To enable construction, all access points onto and off the canal along the construction site will be closed.
The towpath will be closed from Stubbs Bridge, Wyrley & Essington Canal, to the junction of the Walsall Canal, just before Birchills Junction Bridge. Birchills Junction Bridge is open for public access onto the Walsall Canal.
The towpath must be closed to ensure safety of the public. Diverting signage will be placed in advance of the works. Workboats are being utilised to undertake the towpath repairs along the Walsall Lock flight, so there may be short delays whilst boats are being loaded/ unloaded within this area. Please observe local diversions or seek alternative routes.
