River Severn - Dredging

Please be advised that dredging works have now commenced at the top of the East Channel above Gloucester Lock.

As a result of these works slight delays are possible, please proceed with caution and listen to advice from the lock keepers and people on site.

Update

Please be advised that dredging will be carried out at the East Channel parting to remove the sand bank that has recently been causing navigation problems.

This work will be starting on Monday 15th July. 

The navigation will remain open, though boaters may be delayed by up to one hour as dredging plant and pipelines will obstruct the channel temporarily.  Up to date information on the location of the dredger will be available from the lock keepers at Upper Lode and Gloucester Lock.

Please follow the instructions of the dredging crew and pass through the working area with due caution.

Please be advised that as the River continues to be very low, the siltation at The Partings continues to be a significant hazard. Please approach slowly and use extra caution when navigating the river at this point.

The dredging programme below is expected to commence by the end of next week. We will advise more specifically next week.

Update

Please be advised that a dredging programme, as indicated below, is scheduled to commence early in July in the Upper Parting area of the River Severn above Gloucester Lock.

The programme is set to take up to 25 days to complete.

We still advise caution whilst navigating this section of the River due to changing currents depending on the tidal situation

We are able to advise that, after a recent depth survey on the River Severn along this stretch of water, the noted depths are as follows:-

Between 1.60m and 1.75m along the main channel and 1.50m along the fringe.

We are now preparing a dredging programme to further improve the situation and will advise as soon this is in place.

We still advise caution whilst navigating this section of the River due to changing currents depending on the tidal situation

Please be advised that we have observed a build-up of silt at the top of the Partings, which is narrowing the channel by the old Ronson site. Customers are advised to navigate this section of the river in single file and keep to the centre of the channel. Please take extra care when entering or leaving the Partings and remain vigilant for any obstructions.

Please be advised that due to the long period of hot weather, we are currently experiencing very low water levels along the River Severn navigation.

Due to these low water levels, EA regulations demand that we now share locks along the river.

Please ensure you navigate with caution and remain vigilant for obstructions. Report any concerns you may have to the waterway team.
