Description

Our customers will be aware of the difficulties there have been in maintaining water levels on the Rochdale Canal in the last few weeks, especially in the area around Hebden Bridge.  Despite the installation of pumps to supplement the water supply this has not improved to the extent that we would wish, we have also been suffering vandalism at night setting back the chances of water levels recovering properly.

Therefore we are taking the decision to lock the paddle gear on locks 7 to 11 at night time from tonight (3rd August) until further notice.  The lock paddles will be locked at 8pm and reopened again by 8.30am each day.

We hope that this will only be a short term measure.  At the same time we are working to try and secure further water supply to the canal but this is likely to take a few days to be realised.

We know that the current situation is frustrating for people and are sorry about that.  Please be assured that we are doing all that we can to maintain the service on the canal.

We’ll provide a further update when we are able.

For more information about the wider flood repair works affecting the canal at the moment, please follow the updates given by our project manager, Richard Spencer, which can be accessed on or website at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/our-regions/manchester-and-pennine-waterways/flooding-updates-in-your-area/richard-spencer-flooding-blog
