Updates

18/07/2019 11:44

The grout works have now been carried out and navigation fully open.

However please be advised to take care when passing the worksite so as not to catch the tarpaulin sheet on the towpath side.

10/07/2019 11:53

Please be advised navigation will be closed on Monday 15 July, between 8am and 12pm, to allow the safe installation of a tarpaulin sheet. This is necessary to stem the flow and allow the grout to set without it being washed out.

An update will be provided on Monday 15 July following the installation.

27/06/2019 12:17

We are pleased to announce that the canal is now open to navigation.

Please be aware that the navigation will have a restricted width of approximately 3metres (10ft) past the work boat which is on site and therefore craft should pass this section in single file

Please be advised further discussions between our local team and contractors have taken place. It has been decided that to allow extra time for our contractors to work on the repair, the times of passage through the affected area, commencing on Monday 24 June, will now be;

  • 8am till 9am
  • 4pm till 5pm

These daily opening times will remain in place until a full repair is completed onsite.

We politely request our customers to turn off your engine when approaching the main site of work, where you will then be assisted by onsite banksmen through the affected area.

As of Monday 24 June, we are able to provide restricted passage through the ongoing repairs between Bridge 21, Wrenbury Frith Bridge to Marbury Lock, Llangollen Canal.

The times of passage will be 8.30-9.30am and 4-5pm daily, until works are completed onsite.

We politely request our customers to turn off your engine when approaching the main site of work, where you will then be assisted by onsite banksmen through the affected area.

Our teams have successfully reduced the water level in the area and we have installed a tarpaulin sheet over the affected section of bank and in the canal bed, to prevent further washout.  Although this has stabilised the situation initially, we will continue to monitor the water levels and the condition of the bank very closely.

To ensure the safety of our customers, navigation will remain closed and a towpath closure will be implemented between Bridge 21, Wrenbury Frith Bridge and Bridge 23, Church Bridge.

Our contractors are mobilising a crane barge on Monday 17 June to start the repairs. This involves installing rock fill to the toe of the embankment and new steel piles to reinstate the canal bank. We anticipate the repairs will take 2 to 3 weeks to complete.

Once the piles have been installed, we will review the method of works to determine if we are able to complete the repairs under a restriction to navigation.

A further update will be provided on Friday 21 June.

Description

Due to the recent adverse weather conditions in the local area, we have experienced overtopping on the Llangollen Canal between Bridge 22 and Marbury Lock, causing structural damage to the wash wall, towpath and embankment.

Our team is in the process of dewatering this section of the canal to allow a thorough investigation by our engineers.

We understand that this closure may disrupt your schedule. We are taking every step to fix the problem as soon as possible, and we will keep you updated of our progress with an update on Friday following our engineer's investigations.
