30th June 2017
11th August 2017
Time restrictions will be implemented between Lock 53 Brimslade Lock and Lock 56 Crofton Lock, between 15:00 in the afternoon and 10:00 the following day. The Summit Pound cannot currently be maintained at a level suitable for navigation. This is due to the impact of a prolonged period of dry weather, combined with the deterioration of the lock gates and performance of pumping stations.
Under normal circumstances the Summit Pound level reduces during the daytime due to lock movements on either side. At night the pound level is made back up from a combination of back pumping at Wootton Rivers and pumping into the canal from Crofton (Wilton Water). Restricted lockage will allow the Summit Pound longer to recover without movement of water down the lock flights on either side. In addition the restriction will ensure that lock sluices are secured overnight to avoid any loss of water.
Plans are in place to undertake urgent works during July to reduce lock gate leakage along the Wootton Rivers lock flight. In addition works are now being undertaken to improve the reliability of Crofton (Wilton Water) pumping station.
This restriction will be reviewed regularly.
