Couple walking on the Kennet & Avon Canal Couple walking on the Kennet & Avon Canal

Meet Malcolm & Sue in Bathampton,

I'm ex-Merchant Navy so I'm drawn to the water. I get a 'pull' all the time! Wherever I am, and whatever I'm doing, I have to ask myself, “Do I want to be at a top of a mountain?” and the answer is, “No I want to be down by the water.” So here we are, just having a really nice time on this glorious sunny day walking the canal.

We walk a lot. To think you can walk the towpaths all the way from here up to London is just amazing. We were just talking about how there has been a lot of work done along this bit of canal and wondering how much money it must take to keep canals maintained like this.

A spring day on the Kennet & Avon Canal

You only have to have somebody crash into one of the lock gates or bridges and it's big money to fix it. And of course nowadays it costs so much more to repair and keep things maintained. In the old days I guess it would have been one stonemason and a helper, but now you have to have health and safety scaffolding, jackets and kit.

Exploring Bathampton on the Kennet & Avon Canal

We drove here to walk this bit of the Kennet & Avon Canal today. We love the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal too because of its wide open aspect over the river Severn. It's the peace and wildlife we like most about canals I think. It's just lovely.
