"I live on my boat and art is what I do. I'm a self-taught artist and illustrator and I like to draw and paint in my own style. Mostly I work with watercolour and inks, but I'm still playing with mixing different media.
People are turning up and looking at my paintings, but I'm a last-minute sort of person, so I'm not ready yet! I'm here for the first ever floating market in Bradford on Avon. My maps seem to be of interest because someone from Channel 5 was passing this morning and asked if they could use one of my illustrated maps for a new programme they're doing about canals. There's a lot of my local knowledge in the maps and when I had them printed as postcards some local residents were quite pleased to see themselves in the illustrations! I painted these maps on board my boat, then scanned and exported them as PDFs from a hayfield in Pewsey to the printers. Art and the way of life on the canals go well together!
These paintings behind me are a record of life on the canals and the people. It's some of the Kennet & Avon community. I did these as a series for a new book I'm working on. I'm also selling copies of my book 'Hailing Foxes' which is a collection of poems from poets across Bristol in a year when the city was the Green Capital.
I don't have any funding for my books, and I don't bother trying to get any because I think life is too short. I just get on with it. I think there is a great get up and do it attitude on the canal here. I make a living from my art and I sometimes do mechanical things for other boaters too. Living frugally is not a sin on the canals."
