The charity making life better by water

Meet Dennis and Charles

Stourport-on-Severn, Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal

"Stourport, what a lovely place to work! Well, it's not like work. I've had my job with Canal & River Trust for about four years. I live in Halesowen and travel to Stourport every day, but it's not far and it's lovely when I get here.

One of the best things about looking after Stourport Basins is that I can help share our wealth - because it is a wealth, I really believe that. There has been a huge restoration project with lots of changes in Stourport... and anyone who visits in the next few years will see even more changes. It's definitely a special place and we've got a good community here. I'm lucky I've got a good team around me, I really mean that with a passion. Charles has been a volunteer for four years and he's helping me cut the grassy areas all across the basin this morning.

Charles - “Some of the other volunteers in the team like working at the locks, and I've been trained to help at the locks but I like to spend a lot of my time helping Dennis to keep the place tidy for all the visitors who come here. Cutting the grass is an important job, just as much as helping at the locks. I really enjoy volunteering.”

We've only had three or four boats come through the basins this morning so far. It's quiet on the water now that the season is changing. Because I'm employed as a seasonal worker for Canal & River Trust, I finish at the end of this week until next March. Over winter Charles and I will miss our jobs at Stourport Basins - It's our patch and we like working together!"
