Young anglers invited to take part in prestigious championships

Children and young people from all over England and Wales are being invited to register for the 2019 Cadet, Junior and Youth Canal Angling Championships.

Young anglers

Anglers aged from 8 to 18 years old are invited to take part in the championships, which will take place on September 15 2019, in Church Eaton, Staffordshire.

The fishing will take place for up to four hours on the nearby Little Onn section of the Shropshire Union Canal, courtesy of Izaak Walton (Stafford) Angling Association.

Beginners welcome

The event will be a celebration of our Let’s Fish campaign. By taking part in one of our Let’s Fish events happening around our canal network next year, young people can learn the necessary new fishing skills to take part in the prestigious championships.

The Shropshire Union Canal holds abundant quantities of perch, roach, skimmer bream and gudgeon. Participants will experience their float disappearing to their heart’s content using a fishing pole as short as 3 or 4 metres in length.

Peter Henery, Canal & River Trust angling development manager said: “The championships have proved incredibly popular and we’ve lost count of the number of Let’s Fish attendees who wanted the opportunity to take part. This year we’re improving the event by including a cadet section, as well as introducing the opportunity for juniors to pair up to represent their local town, village or angling club on the big day and compete for a new pairs trophy.”

James Lewis, Angling Trust Competition Development Manager added: “We were delighted to see so many young anglers on the bank last year and it really highlights the good work the Canal & River Trust is doing.”

The event is organised in joint partnership by the Canal & River Trust and Angling Trust, and backed with major sponsorship from Angling Direct who are providing prizes for each competitor.

Hassan Khan from Angling Direct said: “Last year’s event was hugely popular - it was inspiring, refreshing and so positive to see so many young people enjoying fishing."
