The newly resurfaced towpath stretches from Cottam Lane at Bridge 16 to Sidgreaves Lane at Bridge 19. The upgraded towpath will allow local people and boaters who use this section of canal to have easy access to the waterway throughout the year.
The work has been supported by Section 106 funding from Preston City Council on behalf of Lancashire County Council. The project has helped to create a pothole and mud-free route that will help communities and students at the nearby University of Central Lancashire to explore their local canal whatever the weather.
Enjoying the benefits by water
Joe Hildred, our enterprise manager, said: “The canal and towpath at Cottam is a popular place for boaters and local people who use it as part of their everyday walks. This improvement will mean people visiting the canal can dodge the puddles when it rains, and we've also improved the access to the canal.
“Having a green space right in the heart of the city is very important for local communities and our research shows that spending time next to water can make you feel happier and healthier. Now this towpath is finished I hope people will visit and enjoy the benefits of being next to water all year round.”
A sustainable way to travel
Councillor David Borrow, Cabinet member for planning and regulation at Preston City Council, added: “The improvements to the towpath are very impressive and the Canal & River Trust has received many compliments both while the work was ongoing and now it is complete.
“Using developer contributions in this way is beneficial for all the community and ensures a sustainable way to travel across the city in a calm and peaceful setting.”
