Largest-ever national celebration of young anglers taking place on Shropshire Union Canal

This September the Shropshire Union Canal will host the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing 2022. Children and young people from all over the country are being invited to book their tickets and join nearly 300 others who are already signed up for the biggest event of its kind.

The Championships are being organised in a partnership between us and the Angling Trust. Tickets for the event, costing £5, are on sale via the Angling Trust website. The closing date for tickets is the 12 September.

The event

The event is open to anglers aged from seven to 20 and will take place on the Shropshire Union Canal. The event is divided into age groups and will be held on the following days:

  • The Cadet (7-10 years old) and Youth events (16-20 years old) will be held on the Shropshire Union Canal at Shebdon, Staffordshire ST20 0PX on Saturday 17 September
  • The Junior event (11-15 years old) will be held on the Shropshire Union Canal at Soudley, near Market Drayton, Shropshire TF9 2NB on Sunday 18 September

The event is the culmination of our Let's Fish! campaign which, throughout the year, will have provided over 11,000 free angling introductory sessions around the country to encourage people of all ages to take up the sport.

A wonderful sport for young people

John Ellis, our national fisheries, and angling manager, said: “Angling is a wonderful sport for young people to try as its cheap to get started and gives them the opportunity to get away from smartphone and games consoles and spend some time outdoors.

“This year's event is already the biggest one yet with nearly 300 young anglers registered to take part. Our aim is to make sure participants have a fun day, land a few fish, learn something new, meet new friends and end up being inspired to come back to our waterways time and time again.”

You can book you tickets through the Angling Trust website.
