Student volunteering week

Here at the Trust we welcome the help of volunteers from all walks of life. Many of our teams work closely with university students, both on long-term placements and for shorter stretches of time. For student volunteering week we caught up with Cybeles Nunziata; who has been helping us to tidy the waterways around Leicester, and Teveil Walker; a student volunteer with our environment team.

Cybeles and her volunteer friendsWhat are you studying at university – and where?
I’m studying a MSc in Energy and Sustainable Building Design at De Montfort University.

Tell us a bit about the volunteer work you’ve been doing with the Trust?
We’ve been working near the Soar River, cleaning the towpath and picking up litter. We also did some planting in some areas, built bird boxes and placed them in the trees. On one of the days we went out on a boat so that we could collect litter that had been thrown into the water.

When did you start volunteering with us?
We started in October and volunteered for 6 weeks altogether.

What attracted you to the volunteer role?
I though it was a great thing to get involved with, helping to tidy up this little haven for nature where everyone can go and enjoy some peace and quiet. It’s a way for me to contribute as a citizen of Leicester and maybe make people conscious of the work that is done to remove the rubbish that they leave so carelessly lying around.

What have you learned from your time with us?
Team work firstly, then even more respect and appreciation for anyone who works permanently in this type of role. I’ve learned how to plant and how to clean without hurting my back. Also about enjoying the little things in life, like being out in the open air.

"I was very happy to volunteer for this project and would like to come back next year. The people from Trust are very patient and made the work fun. Also I really appreciate all the work that the Trust does for our community." Cybeles Nunziata

What was your favourite moment while volunteering with us?
I loved building the bird boxes as I like working with my hands. But I also enjoyed rowing around the river to pick up the floating rubbish with my friends. That was a fun day.

Would you recommend volunteering to your friends?
I would definitively recommend it, in fact I have done already. I think it would be a good experience for everyone.
