Fun for the family in February half term

Looking for something different to do this February half term? It’s time to wrap up warm and head out for adventure. Come along to an Open Day, try a new local walk or delight the ducks with a new snack.

Welly walk at Skipton

Sunshine, rain, fog, snow, in February half term we have to be ready for anything. But whatever the weather, spending time by your local canal will help all the family feel healthier and happier. There's no better time to turn off the screens and head for the towpath.

Come along to an Open Day

 Having fun by the canal

We have some fantastic activities this half term. Come and enjoy a colourful flotilla of boats at Victoria Quays in Sheffield as part of our 200th birthday celebrations. Watch the enormous Anderton Boat Lift in action at our unique Open Day, or find out what life was like for families on heritage working boats at our Birmingham Open Day.

Go for a wet walk

Children playing in puddles

Exploring along our canals makes for great family walks because it's easy to find your way and there is always something interesting to look at. Here are some top tips to keep the children amused along the way:

  • Go for a puddle hunt – how many can you jump in along the way?
  • Count the snails, they love to come out in the rain
  • Take turns to be the leader
  • Watch the ripples from the rain on the water
  • Do a rain dance

Feed the ducks

Feeding the ducks is always a big hit with children, a chance to get up close with nature. Remember that bread is bad for ducks, but there are plenty of alternatives. Make it an experiment - try taking different food and let your children discover what the duck's favourite snack is.
