Go Canoeing Week: join the journey

When I joined British Canoeing last year, National Go Canoeing Week had just taken place. There was still a real buzz around the team around how well it had gone and it was fantastic to hear how many people had got involved.

The main aim for us during the week is to ensure that there is a way for everyone to get on the water; whether they have never been in a boat before or they paddle on a regular basis.

This year I am excited to be right in on the action and it has been a great project to be involved with from conception.

Team effort

With 2016 being an Olympic year we wanted to celebrate the journey’s of all paddlers; from casual canoeists right up to our Olympic athletes. We came up with the title of ‘Join The Journey’ for the week and then set to work on the planning.

We work closely with clubs and centres nationwide to provide them with the resources to put on a huge variety of starter sessions, guided tours, challenges and events throughout the week. In return those clubs and centres work extremely hard to ensure that during Go Canoeing Week your local waterways will be bustling with events and activities.

Perfect way to explore Britain's waterways

Starter sessions and guided tours are ideal for  complete newcomers to paddlesport (like me!), or for those wanting to build up their water confidence. We have hundreds of these sessions and tours listed on the Go Canoeing Week website so you are sure to find one near you.

Through our staff canoeing club I have discovered that canoeing and kayaking are perfect ways to explore Britain's waterways. Whether you live in the city or the countryside they can transport you to tranquil places in no time. Being on the water gives a whole new perspective on areas you thought you knew inside out!

An adventure for everyone

For those who like a challenge we have some fun one, three and six mile challenge routes in hand picked locations around the country. Get down there with family and friends, complete the challenge course and receive a Go Canoeing medal!

If you already have some experience then why not make a day of it and give one of our canoe trails a go? The trail guidance provides you with all you need to know to plan your trip - all you need to do is grab your gear and get going on the perfect independent adventure!

By taking part in the week you will also be helping us towards our target of 30,000 miles paddled! When you register your miles for the week with us you will also be entered into a prize draw to win one of a fantastic range of prizes.

I will be paddling my miles (in a rather wonky line!) on our staff canoeing afternoon. What are you waiting for?! Visit the Go Canoeing Week website now and find your fun!
