Restoring Yorkshire's stone mile

This summer we've been hard at work re-building an important piece of waterways history.

The iconic ‘stone-mile’ separates the village of Barnby Dun from the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation. Earlier this year we called for volunteers who could help us restore this boundary wall to its original state.

The wall was in a sorry condition, having collapsed due to age. But thanks to the work of colleagues and volunteers it is now on the way to standing proud once again.

The work carried out by the heritage team is extremely varied, covering all sorts of structures and a wide variety of projects. Not one week is the same and we keep learning all the time, meeting some fascinating people and visiting stunning places along the way. We are hoping that through our blogs we can share some of our passion for the amazing industrial heritage of the inland waterways.
