Golden Nook Bridge - Shropshire Union Canal

Traffic lights have now been installed at Golden Nook bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Traffic lights at Golden Nook Bridge

We make regular pleas to drivers to slow down when crossing our historic canal bridges. Over the past year we have had to spend over £1million repairing bridges hit by drivers. Repairs following vehicle strikes are an additional, unexpected burden on the charity’s resources in terms of time and finance.

Alongside Cheshire West & Chester Council we have been working together to address the issue of frequent damage to Golden Nook Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal near the village of Huxley, south of Chester. Since 2011, at least five vehicle strikes have been recorded, incurring costs of £125,000. The bridge is unlisted but is an important feature on this part of the former Chester Canal and constructed in the late 1700s. There have been several incidents where cars have ended up in the canal when trying to take the sharp bend on Long Lane just before the bridge.

Golden Nook Bridge, work in progress

After careful consideration and planning, traffic lights have now been installed at the bridge, with costs shared between the two organisations. This will help to reduce the risk of further accidents and safeguard the historic bridge for the future.

We would remind drivers to slow down and take care when crossing these bridges, part of the nation’s cultural heritage’.
