When I started working at the Trust nearly 18 months ago (it doesn't seem that long ago!) I was very much thrown in at the deep end (if you'll excuse the pun) of the south east visitor mooring project. Although I had arrived after the 'very heated' consultation on the proposals to change stay times at lots of short-stay visitor moorings had ended, and the initial plans were being scaled back, there was still a lot of the strong views from boaters about the issue.

I regularly hear feedback from different people about a few inconsiderate people who don't think about others when they use our towpaths. I say different people, because no one group is flagged up in these comments more than another. I've heard grumbles about cyclists travelling too fast, anglers using scarce moorings, boaters who clutter up towpaths, pedestrians who 'walk in packs' - the list could go on.

I was reading a newspaper article online a few weeks ago that suggested that we are very close to driverless cars being introduced on the roads. Apparently the technology now exists that means we could see this 'sci-fi' fantasy become a reality within years not decades.

It's pretty clear from looking at our canal network that awareness of and accommodation for disabled people was pretty non existent when our canals were built 200 years ago.

The August bank holiday saw the start of the much discussed new visitor mooring arrangement at Foxton, Stoke Bruerne and Thrupp.

Getting out on the water with a boater, certainly time well spent.

How do we ensure our fantastic canals and rivers are experienced by and open to all?
A very different story of canals on each side of 'the pond'.
