Angling Trust Division 1 National Newsletter 2017 (courtesy of Dave Watkins and Terry Nutt) update as of 23-4-2017

Mr Captain / Team Manager,

We welcome you to Shropshire and the Division 1 National, which will be held on the Shropshire Union Canal on August 19 2017. My name is Dave Watkins and I will be the joint organiser along with Terry Nutt of the event. Having organised Angling Times semis and big events in the past, we are very keen for this match to be a showpiece for Hodnet Angling Club and the North Shropshire area. The draw headquarters will be at Barbers, Market Drayton Livestock Auction, situated just off the A 53 Market Drayton bypass, (Sat Nav TF9 3SW).The match length will start at High Offley (Sat Nav ST20 0NG) and run through Market Drayton ending up at Coole Pilate (CW5 8AU). All teams must be aware that all the sections are in open countryside and accesses are very limited. They involve driving down narrow country lanes where one could meet heavy agricultural machinery and especially milk lorries, taking up most of the road. Parking for practice will be available at most of the road bridges, but anglers must keep all drives and gateways clear at all times.

Team Captains & Managers,

Things have been moving along in preparation for the Div 1 National, set for August 19th on the Shropshire Union Canal, hosted by Hodnet Angling Club. The Open matches were all sold out within a month of going to press, which created a few moans from teams that did not realise the popularity of this venue. With the demand so great, it was decided to run two extra Opens, with teams on the reserve lists to be offered first chance for bookings. These will be held on Saturday June 17th on G Section, and on Sunday July 30th on G, H & J Sections. These new matches are also now fully booked together with reserve lists.

Any teams wishing to practice in line-ups or individually would be advised to get in touch with me, either by phone (07725556159) or Email (dgwatkins@sky.com) as to the availability of any of the sections that are intended to be fished. I have a list of dates that sections will be available and will take team bookings on a first come, first served basis, and will be able to direct you to your chosen spot. If you are planning two or more visits, I recommend that you think about the Canal Rover Tickets, which will save your team money. They can only be purchased from myself (Dave Watkins), priced at £10 per individual with savings being made for team purchases. All the pegs have been marked and anglers are asked to practice on the pegs marked with blue paint, (yellow paint on K Section). At the moment there are 50 pegs per section, the minimum distance between the pegs is 22 metres, which will be used in all the matches, including the National. We would be very grateful if after finishing your session, you either take any excess bait or groundbait home or throw it away in the hedgerow or field and NOT IN THE CANAL.

All Open Match draw venues will be open from 7-30am, and breakfasts will be available on request. The pools for all matches will be £15 all in, with a rolling draw from 8-30am onwards allowing time to travel to the sections. Fishing will be from 11am, with the all-out at 4pm. Unfortunately, in some sections, anglers will have a brisk walk to their pegs due to there being very limited accesses to the countryside venues. Safe parking will be available in all sections.

On close inspection I found fault with some of the Sat Nav readings on the maps provided by the Canal & River Trust which were distributed with the first newsletter. These have now been amended and taken from the canalplan.org.uk/gazetteer website, and are as follows;

A Section Br 42 (ST20 0NG) to Br 44 (ST20 0PT)

B Br 44 (ST20 0PT) to Br 45 (ST20 0QH)

C Br 46 (ST20 0QH) to Br 48 (ST20 0RH)

D Br 48 (ST20 0RH) to Br 51 (TF9 2NB)

access drive from Br 52 (TF9 2SD)

E Br 51 (TF9 2NB) to Br 53 (TF9 2NZ)

F Br 53 (TF9 2NZ) to Br 56 (TF9 2LW)

Br 55 (TF9 2LP)

BR 65 (TF9 4BH)

G Br 64 (TF9 1RL) to Br 66 (TF9 3TR)

H Br 66 (TF9 3TR) to Br 69 (TF9 3TN)

Access to Br 67 from A529 road via farm drive (Lees Farm)

Br 69 (No bridge parking available)

J Br 72 (TF9 3TJ) to Br 74 (CW3 0DS)

K Br 82 (CW5 8AU) to Br 84 (CW5 8AU)

The Shropshire Union Canal has an average width of 13 metres with approximately four to four and a half feet of depth in the centre track. The main flow on sections A to G is from right to left, however on section H, bridge 67, which is known locally as the crossover bridge, the towpath is on the other side meaning that the canal will tow from left to right for the remaining sections. There is no ban on the use of catapults, but anglers must be aware in the sections where boats are moored opposite, not to catapult bait to close or onto the boat.

Day tickets will be available on the bank in all sections from a water bailiff priced at £4. A special Canal Rover ticket can also be obtained, enabling an angler to practice anywhere on the match length for unlimited times. Canal Rover tickets can be bought individually or by any team on block, there being a special deduction for team tickets. Please ring or text for details.. These tickets priced at £10 will only be available from myself (Dave Watkins) by request e.g. Phone 07725556159, Email dgwatkins@sky.com or Text prior to fishing. They will run from 1 April until 13 August and must be produced to a water bailiff on request. Any team wishing to practise in a group in a specific area would be advised to contact me to find out the availability of the area, before fishing. Any areas of the match length may be pre-booked on a first come, first served basis. The pegging on the match length for practise purposes will be determined by white painted canes behind each peg on every section, (until they get nicked). These 50 pegs will be used in all Open Matches leading up to and including the main event. Anglers wishing to practice on H Section must call at the farmhouse (Mr Brindley) on arrival to see about the availability of the driveway to Bridge 67. This is the only access to this section and must not be abused. It will probably be fully available from mid May onwards, with an honesty box in place to cover parking (£1 donations going to charity). Every effort has been made to ensure that all the pegs are fair, equidistant and safe and clear of wires and other obstructions.

Here is a warning and advice to all teams and individuals who are travelling on the weekend of the big match to be aware of traffic problems around the approach of the M54 junction on the M6. It is the weekend of the “V” Music Festival at Weston Park, where horrendous queues build up from Thursday onwards, build up on the approaches. This will involve teams coming from the South, South West, East Anglia, and the West Midlands. My advice would be to continue up the M6 to junction 15 and proceed to Market Drayton via the A53 road, (signed for Shrewsbury). The draw venue is just off the A53 road.

We at Hodnet Angling Club are looking forward to hosting the forthcoming events, and Terry and myself are always ready to answer any of your queries.

Bait bans

Bloodworm and Joker and any form of pellets are banned on the entire match length.
