Towering above the canal is the tall spire of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Peter. It was built in 1859 at a cost of just over £2000. The gothic architecture makes a dramatic change from the canal-side mills.
Repairing the weather vane on top of the cathedral’s 73 metres (240 foot) high spire called for someone experienced in tall buildings.
