"I’ve always been a lover of the great outdoors and used to go on walking holidays with my friend Phil. Phil got a job nearly three years ago with the Trust as a Data Collector. A couple of years later there was another vacancy and I got the job, so Phil and I work together.
We’re based out of the historic Braunston Toll office and our patch covers the Oxford and Grand Union Canals. As Data Collectors for the enforcement team our role is to walk and cycle the towpaths logging every boat we see into our hand held computers.
On many of our walks there can be long stretches of canal with very few boats to check and you do see a lot of wildlife. As we do our boat checking individually, we started taking photos of the wildlife we were seeing to show each other at the end of the day. We’ve seen loads of different creatures from water voles to grass snakes and even water buffalo in a farmers field next the canal. Its becomming a bit of a competition between us!
I really feel so lucky to work in the outdoors, working at the Trust has made me realise just how wonderful the canals are and I really enjoy spotting the wildlife on my travels."
