Terms and conditions

The terms and conditions for entering our Words on the Waterways writing competition.

1 To enter

To enter this competition an individual must upload an original piece of travel writing inspired by a Canal & River Trust-owned canal or river via the competition entry page at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/writing-competition. Entries must be no more than 300 words long. Entry to this competition is free of charge.

1.2

Your entry can be submitted at any time from 9am on Monday 29 June 2020 (‘The Start Date’) until 8pm on Monday 31 August 2020 (‘the Closing Date’)

1.3

All information contained in the online entry, forms part of these rules, save where that information contradicts these rules, in which case these rules shall prevail. It is a condition of entry that these rules are accepted as final and that each participant agrees to abide by these rules. Submission of an entry will be deemed to mean acceptance of these rules.

1.4

Entries through agents or a third party will be invalid.

2 Eligibility

2.1

This competition is open to all United Kingdom residents aged 16 or over, except those who at any time between the Start Date and the Closing date (inclusive) are employees or volunteers of Canal & River Trust (‘The Promoter’) or any of its subsidiaries, their families or those otherwise associated with organising this competition.

 

2.2

All competition entries must be received by the Promoter no later than 8 pm on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after this time are automatically disqualified from the competition.

2.3

The Promoter reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter any of the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion and if circumstances arise outside of its control.

2.4

Stories must not have been previously published elsewhere.

3 Validity

3.1

Participants can only submit one story into the competition. Any individual found to use multiple email addresses to enter will be ineligible. No responsibility can be accepted for entries that have been deleted and proof of sending will not be accepted as proof of receipt. Correspondence will be entered into only at the absolute discretion of the Promoter.

3.2

Entries may be disqualified if they:

  • Contain any offensive, defamatory, illegal, malicious, indecent or other inappropriate content;
  • Have been submitted previously in any promotion or competition of any kind or shared publicly through any means;
  • Refer to brands or promote businesses other than those of the Promoter;
  • Bring the Promoter or any other party into disrepute or would damage their reputation;
  • Include trademarks, logos, copyright, designs or any other third party-owned materials or intellectual property which the entrant does not have the express permission to use;
  • Include names or identifying information of any individual without their express permission;

3.3

The Promoter reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if they have reason to believe that a participant has breached these rules.

4 Entries

All writing submitted into this competition may be used in promotions and advertising by the Canal & River Trust with or without credit to the author (first name or surname). The story will only be used by the Canal & River Trust for eight years after the Closing Date. After this date, the story will no longer be used for any future promotions or advertising. All other rights remain with the author.

5 Copyright and Permissions

5.1

Participants must guarantee that they are the sole owner of the copyright for each story they submit. Entries submitted on behalf of another person will not be accepted.

5.2

It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure that their submitted stories do not infringe the copyright of any third party.

5.3

Participants must warrant that their entry does not infringe on the privacy rights, copyright or any other rights of any person.

5.4

The participant must warrant that they have obtained the permission of any person described in the story (or, where the story describes any persons under 18, have the consent of their parent/carer) for the usage rights required by the competition and will indemnify the Promoter against any claims made by any third parties in respect of such infringement.

5.5

Copyright for all stories entered into this contest remains with the respective participants. However, each participant grants a worldwide royalty-free perpetual licence to the Promoter to feature any of the entries in any and all media (including print and online) for publicity, education and marketing purposes.

6 To win

6.1

Winning entries will be selected by 11 September 2020. All valid and correct entries made between 9am Monday 29 June 2020 until 8 pm on Monday 31 August 2020 will be entered into the competition and winners will be announced on Friday 18 September 2020.

6.2

There will be one winning entry for the competition, and two runner-up prizes, selected by a panel of judges from all valid and correct entries. Multiple stories from one individual are not accepted.

6.3

The Promoter’s decision on all matters relating to the competition will be final.

7. The Prize

7.1

There are three prizes to be won, these will be allocated to the selected winners through a panel selection. The prizes are:

The Ode Less Travelled, Paperweight and Mythos

  1. The Ode, signed by Steven Fry
  2. Paperweight by Steven Fry, signed by Steven Fry
  3. Mythos by Steven Fry, signed by Steven Fry

The prizes are exclusive of insurance. There are no cash alternatives and the prizes are non-transferrable.

7.2

The Promoter will notify the prize winners via email within 7 days of the winners being selected. The prize winners will then have 7 days in which to respond to the Promoter’s message within which they must inform the Promoter of their preferred postal address for the delivery of the prize, which must be within the UK.

7.3

In the event that: (a) a prize-winner fails to inform the Promoter of their preferred address for delivery within 7 days of the Promoter’s email message; or (b) any prize is returned to the Promoter as undeliverable; the Promoter reserves the right to disqualify the prize winner and select an alternative prize-winner in accordance with Rule 6 above, save at a later date.

7.4

The Promoter is not responsible for any goods or services supplied under these competition rules.

7.5

Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of the prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Promoter and accordingly, the Promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the competition, its rules or prizes and the participant agrees that no liability shall attach to the Promoter as a result thereof. In the event that a prize is unavailable for any reason, the Promoter reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value at any time.

8 Winner publicity

Participants accept that, if they win, the Promoter will have the right, without additional payment or permission, to use their first name for the purposes of announcing the winners of this competition and for related promotional purposes.

9 Data privacy

9.1

Any personal data received during the competition will be processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Trust’s privacy policy. By entering the competition, the participant agrees that any personal data provided with the competition entry may be held and used only by the Promoter or its agents or suppliers to administer the competition.

9.2

The Trust will hold participants personal data for no longer than necessary.

9.3

Participants have the right to request access, erase, rectify, object and restrict the processing of their personal data. To exercise any of these rights please email Information.Request@canalrivertrust.org.uk.

10 The Promoter

The Promoter is Canal & River Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee registered in England & Wales under the company number 7807276 and the registered charity number 1146792, whose registered office is at First Floor North, Station House, 500 Elder Gate, Milton Keynes, MK9 1BB (please do not send entries to this address). Please quote ‘Words on the Waterway Writing Competition’ on all correspondence.

11 General

Please retain a copy of these rules for your reference. English law applies to these terms and conditions and any dispute arising from, or in connection with them. The exclusive jurisdiction of English courts shall prevail.

12 Acceptance

By entering the competition, you are agreeing to the terms and conditions.
