The people who worked on the Victorian canal barges were nomadic families, living in their barges as they travelled back and forward with cargoes of coal and gravel.
Very few could write. They brought their families up on the barges, giving birth wherever they happened to be en-route with their cargo.
George Robinson talks about his own barge-working family. He describes how his grandfather Thomas signed his marriage certificate with a cross and where the children were born along the canal.
The next trail QR codes are west at the aqueduct or south where you can see the Carriage Works.
