This old building housed the canal company carpenter’s workshop, with accommodation above. The carpenters would have repaired lock gates and wooden footbridges along this length of canal, and their work increased with winter ice.
Angela Washington and Malcolm Taylor remember the frozen canal of the 1970s. Angela’s cat used to sit in the middle of the canal, while Malcolm skated past the carpenter’s shop into the city centre.
