Crewe rod Paul Dobing (Browning Lifestyle) won by a clear margin at Sunday’s Hodnet AC Open on the Palethorpes section of the Shropshire Union Canal in Soudley, Shropshire. After yet another heavy Saturday night frost, the weights were reasonable but many anglers struggled to catch. Drawn in B Section, Paul had some good bream and small silvers on pole-fished caster and worm for a top weight of 10-0-0 exact. Runner-up Jeff Shaw (Team Guinness) caught small fish steadily on poled bread punch in A section to scale 6-11-0, ahead of Des Dingwall’s 6-5-0 which included a brace of good bream plus bits from the same section.
Round one of the popular Kennet & Avon Teams of Four Spring League was held on the Semmington to the Pile length of the Kennet & Avon Canal in Wiltshire where the venue fished hard and bites were at premium for many. Drawn at Bowerhill Lane, Andy Langham (Sensas Wiltshire Angling Green) headed the 92-strong field with four bream and one perch, snared on poled maggot over worm for a 10-6-0 top weight. Runner-up on the day was Matt Barnett (Drennan Bordon Blue) with 7-12-0 of skimmers on the pole from the Pile and a tie occurred for the third spot when Nick King (Browning Andover Claret) and Dave Pool (Homestores) both weighed in 7-10-0 apiece. Drennan Bordon Aqua took the team spoils on the day with 76 points. Devizes Preston Innovations Thatchers and Homestores followed with 73 and 70 points respectively.
The Cornerstone AC Waters of the Grand Union Canal in Small Heath, Birmingham were the location for Sunday’s 44-entry round two of the Sensas Black Country Teams of Four Spring League. Birmingham-based tackle dealer Paul ‘Digger’ Downes (Digger’s Men) ran out a clear winner on peg 49 where he poled squatt and caster over groundbait, netting quality roach to 8oz backed-up by a welcome 2lb bream for an unassailable 17-6-0. The next two in the frame came from either side of the winner, both anglers having scaled all roach nets. Ken Roberson (Browning West Midlands) came second on peg 50 with redfins to 8oz again, taken on poled squatt and bread punch fished to the far shelf to record 8-2-8, ahead of Alan Donnally (Preston Innovations Black Horse) who returned 6-8-0, gathered on pole-fished bread punch and hemp at peg 48. Browning Lifestyle headed the team standings on the day with 11 points and Sensas Black Country ‘B’ were runners’-up on 19 points, ahead of Preston Innovations Black Horse’s 20 points which now sees them currently atop the league on 40 points, one point clear of Browning Lifestyle’s 41.
Twenty one Halesowen RBL set up along the Castlecroft stretch of the Staffs & Worcs Canal in Wolverhampton, West Midlands on Sunday. Steve Horton notched up a convincing triumph on peg 9, where he poled chopped worm and caster to net seven chub to 3lb plus one perch for an unbeatable 17-14-0. Martyn Knight followed with 10-1-0 consisting of half a dozen chub which fell to poled worm and caster peg 4, leaving Barry Robson in third who chose the same bait tactics on peg 2, attracting mainly perch for 7-5-0.
Twenty five Tring AC members lined the towpath of the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal in Broughton, Buckhamshire for their latest Sunday club bout where most of the catches were depressed after a hard overnight frost and the anglers had to contend with an easterly wind although conditions were bright and sunny throughout the day, however Pete Durrant trounced the rest of his club mates when he banked ten worm-tempted bream in the second half of the match for an excellent 26-3-8 top weight. Most of the other weights were mainly roach to poled bread punch and Danny Cruise came second with 5-11-0 of roach and skimmers, leaving Steve Gunner in third with all roach for 5-4-0. The Aylesbury Arm is the venue for the 30th July Angling Trust and Canal & River Trust Canal Pairs Qualifier.
After the anglers battled through the early morning blizzard to get to the venue, in-form Wolverhampton AA VDE skipper Paul Turner made it two on the bounce at Saturday’s Browning Lifestyle/Stafford Izaak Walton Open, held this week on the Stafford Boat Club section of the Staffs & Worcs Canal in Stafford, Staffordshire. Pole-fishing his favoured caster bait on the noted ‘stump’ peg 5, Paul bagged one good bream with the remainder of his 5-15-15 catch being perch. Stoke’s Eric Gardner (Team Eclipse) followed with 4-2-0 of punch-roach from Marina Mouth peg 7, leaving Dudley-based Canal & River Trust operative Kevin Perry (Maver Midlands) in third on next peg 6, at the other side of the Marina Mouth where he poled maggot and caster for 3-6-0 of chiefly roach, alongside a couple of perch.
Weather conditions were sunny and warm on the Rodbaston length of the Staffs & Worcs Canal in Staffordshire during Wednesday’s 20-entry Wolverhampton Over 60’s Club Open where many of the anglers were enjoying a spot of sunbathing for a change. Bilston Angling Centre’s Mick Westwood found himself among the chub on peg 16 and managed to net four caster-tempted samples for a clear win with 9-9-0. Goodyear AC men were next in the frame when Telford-based duo Mick Round and Ray Bates both poled pinkie and squatt for predominantly roach and gudgeon to return 3-6-6 and 3-2-11 from adjacent pegs 19 and 20 respectively.
Fresh from a mid-week win at last week’s Wolverhampton Over 60’s Club Open, local canal specialist Dave Smith stole the show at Sunday’s Bridgtown Social AC club contest on the The Boat PH section of the Staffs & Worcs Canal in Penkridge, Staffordshire. A hard overnight frost killed the match for the first two hours however after the weather brightened up, Dave managed to find two 3lb bream plus bits and pieces to poled caster and worm for 7-7-0. Next came Jason Edmunds on end peg 15 with 6-1-7 which included one bream pushing 3½lb, together with skimmers and small silvers, attracted on caster and pinkie baits. Roy Grosvenor had seven caster and worm-enticed fish in his third-placed 5-15-0 net, a 3lb bream, a 2lb+ perch alongside roach and gudgeon from peg 6.
