Things to see & do

Families with children can spend time while waiting by exploring the towpath adjacent to the Stables, Crooklands Bridge (166) and Wakefields Wharf. Quiz sheets are available. Children are also encouraged to look out for wildlife both in and out of the water and frequently they can join in supervised pond dipping sessions beside the stables.

There are lots of water birds and often their young to be seen ,including Mallard ducks, Mute Swans, Moorhens, Heron, Kingfishers, etc. Other visitors include Cormorant, and Buzzard and Kestrel. Visitors are also encouraged to note the different habitats that border the canal and the contrasting vegetation.

The boat trip

While on the boat a crew member talks about and answers questions about the history of the canal and its surrounds, and points out features of particular interest. Restoration projects on the Northern Reaches are also explained.
