William Jessop was a gifted and well-regarded engineer. He was chosen by the Ellesmere Canal Company to be their Chief Engineer. Jessop designed the canal and plotted the best route for it, choosing the spot that is now Ellesmere Port on the Mersey.

This exhibition will explore William Jessop’s importance in canal engineering and for the town we know today. It features original architectural drawings by Jessop for the Ellesmere Canal produced in 1794.
